Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
